High ankle sprains are a unique type of injury that damages the ligaments between the tibia and fibula bones of the ankle. These ligaments are located above the ankle joint and help hold the bones together. High ankle sprains most commonly develop from high-impact sports injuries or falls.
High Ankle Sprains
Depending on the severity, high ankle sprains may involve injury to ligaments, bone, or both. Symptoms of high ankle sprains include ankle weakness and pain that increases when pressure is placed on the foot and ankle.
Some high ankle sprains will heal with rest. But many require surgery to repair the connecting ligaments.
High ankle sprain surgery involves stabilizing the tibia and fibula bones together. A suture implant or long screws are inserted across the bones above the ankle joint to hold the bones in place.
During high ankle sprain surgery, the surgeon makes a small incision along the outer side of the ankle, allowing access to the area above the ankle joint for insertion of an implant to provide stability.
